Hi there Tim,
Todd Grannis is an unusual name, and even more coincidental that he would be 38 this year as well. Does the picture look similar too? Anyhoo... I've been all over the US, but never to Michigan. =)

Subject: hello
hello Mr.Grannis
I am a 9 year old Korean kid named William Park.
I am currently living in China because of my father's business.
I have heard that you almost killed yourself.
I am very interested on the story.
And if you don't mind, please tell me what is you age.
I heard you are 35 but someone else said 38.
And also I want to hear a little more about the amazing thing you did.
All I heard is that you almost burned yourself! (and how, too? How can you still have normal body and everything after burning? Amazing!)
I hope I'm not being a nuisance to you!
sincerely, from faraway across the globe,
William
Hi William,
First I want to tell you this is definitely something you don't want to try at home. I had a professional stuntman, who has safely performed hundreds of fire jumps, coordinate the stunt. We also had two Emergency Medical Technicians and a Registered Nurse standing by.
I'm 38 years old. I was wearing a special fire suit that was thoroughly soaked in cold water just two minutes before. This provided sufficient insulation that I felt virtually no heat around my body -I was maybe even a bit cold! But the crowd of people standing 50 feet away could feel the heat from the flame.
The idea was to *safely* create a spectacular visual effect and a lasting memory. Girls like to have a story to tell about the way their husband proposed. It doesn't have to be big, just thoughtful. To create a memorable proposal is to give her a gift that she can talk about for the rest of her life.
I wanted to show Malissa that I love her, and that I'm ON FIRE FOR HER. That may sound a little corny, but when two people are in love, sometimes a little corny is ok.
Thanks for writing William, and thanks for being a part of it!
-Todd

What girl wouldn't melt over her boyfriend turning himself into a Roman candle for the Fourth of July?! Ha! Then to top it off he asks her to marry him! The planning that went into that proposal is really impressive. Malissa, you're a lucky girl! Todd is definitely one of a kind! I wish you both a long, happy and HOT marriage!!

For most "gals" a 2.5 c. diamond would do the trick. You've set a new (higher and hotter) standard Todd.
For the bride and groom - your life together won't always be this exciting, but your kindness and love for each other will easily eclipse the proposal.

Wow! It is really nice to know that there are still some men out there who are willing to put themselves out there and show no fear to express how they feel. And more so, it makes me glad to see that there are such women out there to inspire those very men. If Todd ends up in the dog house for some reason, his wife can always say, "If you love me, you'll set yourself on fire!" How can he say No? Just kidding. It seems that this will be a fun marriage and if you have to choose between fun(comedy) and romance, take the comedy. Laughing and fun is always a precursor to romance. Not the other way around. When you have kids, the comedy will come in alot handier than romance.
Enjoy your life together. It sure started off with a bang!

Whoa! You will forever be known now as the "hot couple". Not such a bad thing. Great Job, Todd! I heard about you on Kidd Kraddick in the Morning on 97.3 KISS FM, Savannah, GA.
My hubby surprised me on Valentines Day with a heirloom bear that I had been wanting. (His mom made these beautiful stuffed animals and I had been wanting her to make a particular one for me. They were very vintage-looking and something that you would pass on to your children.) He took me out to a nice candle-lit dinner, then while we were waiting on dessert, a girl brought me a package that had a big bow on it. I thought "oh, how sweet, I get a present." I began to open it and inside was the bear I had been wanting. I took it out and looked at him. It was so sweet. Then he said "there's something else there." I said "no, the box is empty sweetie." He said "well it looks like the bear is engaged." I looked at the wrist of the bear and sure enough there was a georgeous 2 carat engagement ring attached with a ribbon. I said, "what is that!?!" Then he got on one knee, untied the ribbon, held the ring, and asked me to become his wife. I cried, oh I cried. But they were happy tears. Actually, I forgot to say "yes" in all the excitement, so the older couple sitting near our table quietly asked, "what's your answer?" I then shouted "YES" and everyone clapped and gave congrats to us. It was very sweet. No fire involved, unless you count the candle on the table... ha ha. :) Since then, we have been married for 8 years and have 2 boys, Landon is 6 and Cohen is 3 months. I wish the two of you the happiness that my husband and I have experienced. Marriage is hard. But it is so rewarding as well. Be good to each other and always remember the way you feel right now. Best wishes! JL

I saw your web site on the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning website. I thought I would tell you about the really awesome way my husband proposed. It starts off by me getting him something for valentines day. My husband is the only parent to two amazing boys. He is all they have, so when I was trying to figure out what to get him for Valentines Day, I had to include them. So I got us four semi-pro hockey tickets for Feb. 28, 2004. Which happened to be my 29th birthday. I gave them the tickets on Valentines Day and they were so excited. Well my husbands company has an office in the same town, and he had a friend over there that was going to get us out on the ice at half time to start a relay race. On your mark, get set, GO! Was what I was going to get to say, into the mic, for the whole arena. Which was sold out for the first time in like ten years. So we put on these safety helmets, and got to the middle of the ice, with a radio station DJ, and all the relay racers, and the DJ tells everyone its my birthday and hands my husband the mic. He then proceeds to get down on one knee and pop the question. I had know idea what was going on, I was so surprised. He had totally set the whole thing up, ahead of time. I never had a clue. Thinking back I can't even remember saying yes, I was so shocked. It was the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me. I love sharing this story!!
Oh and congats on your engagement, good luck!!!

I was amazed when I read the story in the paper -- especially since I'd seen you just an hour before and you hadn't mentioned setting yourself on fire. But then I thought: If I heard that somebody in Grants Pass had set himself on fire to express his love for his fiancee -- and had come away from it unsinged -- whose name would immediately come to mind? Uh-huh. Congratulations, Torch and Malissa.
